My Love of MacIntosh Apples

As I've been reading the tributes to Steve Jobs, I started thinking about my long love affair with Apple.

My Dad bought a Macintosh in the early '80s. It was much more compact and easier to use than the large desktop PC my Mom had bought for her business.

The little Macintosh was a neat toy, but I wasn't interested. Later that year  I got up close and personal with computers when I learned COBOL in college. Ugh! I never wanted to get near a computer again!

When I began teaching we were assigned a Radio Shack TRS-80.  I rarely booted it up, it took too long. A couple of years later we received a grant to buy computers for our classrooms. Another Macintosh entered my life, and this time I was ready to learn more.

We were able to take the computers home for the summer, my young son and I had fun discovering new computer games. Our absolute favorite was mini-golf. We spent hours each day playing all three challenging courses.

I was in love with the Mac and decided to purchase one as our first home computer. It was easy to use and easy for the kids to figure out on their own.

I loved the little trash can and the simple operating system. It may just be my own fanciful thinking, but Macs seem to be designed for a left handed person. Hey, creative types love Macs. Can you say Pixar?

I got to know my Mac intimately when I entered graduate school. Four years of researching and writing term papers helped me become computer literate.

In my work world, I am surrounded by PC's. I tolerate their strange quirks and annoying glitches. If someone tells me they don't like Macs, I tell them they've never used one consistently. Once on a Mac, you never change back!

As I type this on my favorite possession, my MacBook,  I hope that the Apple ingenuity and creative ideas of their founder Steve Jobs, lives on. I will remain a loyal Apple fan.
