Bear burglarizes house, steals birthday cake.
Apparently a bear pried open the backdoor of a house in the country, and proceeded to ransack the kitchen. The bear lumbered off after eating some food, and left with the birthday cake. Fish and Wildlife officers found a bear trail behind the house through the woods. The bear left trash all along the trail.
But wait, it gets better. The officers decided to lure the bear out of his hiding place. They used cupcakes as bait, because, "the bear obviously has a sweet tooth."
I am going to use that story with my students this week. It is my hope that the story will motivate them to create their own crazy news story. Creative writing for middle school children is sheer drudgery, and that breaks my heart.
I want to teach kids to love words. I want them to understand that words are power.
Words can create peace, or war. Words can soothe and calm. Words can inspire and excite.
There is a huge disconnect in schools between Language Arts and Reading. Even when textbooks use literature to illustrate writing, kids still see them as two separate subjects. I am trying to build a bridge between the two. I want kids to love reading and writing.
