The early morning tweet from my son had me jumping out of bed. The crew was southbound and was only an hour away from our home. I had not even started on the food much less had a cup of coffee!
The "five guys" rolled in about 9:30 a.m. They stumbled into the house blurry eyed and sleep stunned.
The conversation opened up as they sat around table and ate. I had planned a luncheon menu, not intending on having them arrive so early.
So at 10:30 the guys filled themselves with hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, coleslaw and baked beans. I served brownies for dessert. After sitting around talking while their stomachs slowly filled, each boy fell silent. One by one they stretched out on the floor in the family room and succumbed to sleep.
My sons and I retreated to the kitchen and spent the next hour catching up. A couple of hours later, they were up and ready to hit the road and the beach. No matter that it is 63 degrees with a stiff wind, and the water temperature is in the 50's, they were ready for Spring Break.
This is their senior year, the last hurrah. In a few short months these boys will walk across the stage, accept their college diplomas, and then scatter like seeds in the wind. They will cherish these memories of good times and fun for the rest of their lives.
And what a bonus for me- the chance to see my son, meet his friends, and return the hospitality that so many of these young men's families have extended to my son when he is far from his home.
