The Art of Cooking

A gray day here in NE Florida. I decided this early afternoon to whip up some chocolate chip cookies. I wanted my peeps to come home on this nasty day and be greeted by the warm smell of vanilla, brown sugar and chocolate.

I usually cook dinner most evenings. I enjoy trying something new and I love refining an old recipe as well. I can dazzle my kids and friends with my ability to create a meal in 30 minutes, but I also love taking my time as I carefully work my way through a new recipe. I love the process just as much, if not more, than the finished product.

Apparently cooking is not only good for the body and the heart, it is good for the soul as well. I read an article in this morning's paper about the benefits cooking has on your body and mind. Gathering ingredients, the rhythmic sound of chopping vegetables, stirring and tasting; all of these tasks force your mind to focus and rely on your senses. This concentration lowers your blood pressure and calms you down.

For me, cooking and baking soothe my soul. I stand in my kitchen and chop, saute, stir, taste. It's an art form- my medium for expressing myself. It's a ballet as I move from task to task. It's a canvas in which I express myself through flavors and textures, colors and presentation. It's music listening to the sounds of sizzling meat, sauteed onions, the sound of the mixer blending butter and sugar, or the gentle sigh dough makes as I cut biscuits with a glass.

I love the smells that waft through the house when I open the oven door to check on the roast chicken, or the rich smell of meat sauce that has been simmering on the stove all day. Cooking is another way for me to let my creative juices flow. And ultimately, cooking has become one of the many ways I can express my love to those who are dear to me.
