My husband took me out on a date last night. After seeing my son off to prom, and worrying a bit about him driving in the rainy weather, we dressed up and went to dinner at a nice restaurant.
The place was half full of adults of various ages talking softly, drinking wine and dining on farm raised lamb and wild salmon. We had wine, and my husband remarked that he wanted to take me out for a "grown-ups" evening.
After dinner, we walked up the block to the local playhouse and sat down for the show. Minutes after the first act began, a young woman sitting with two friends one row back and to our left, began to talk. She continued making more and more comments and talking louder. We tried looking back and giving her "the look." Unfortunately, she did not take the hint.
Finally, I left the theatre to find the manager. When I told him about the problem, he apologized and went to sit behind us and observe the behavior. At intermission, he asked to speak to the three patrons in the lobby. A few minutes later the manager returned. He apologized for the disturbance and told us he had spoken to the trio, things escalated so he told them to leave.
The second act was quiet except for the laughter from the audience. Afterwards I thanked the manager for dealing with the disturbance. As we walked out of the theatre, my husband and I wondered aloud why the young people had not been able to display proper theatre manners.
Obviously, it was an evening for grown-ups only.
