I saw a sampler with those words- "I believe in you" embroidered on tea cloth and I began to think about what a powerful punch those words deliver. They resonate on so many levels.
We all need to hear those words from someone. Perhaps we were lucky to have a parent tell us, or a grandparent. Maybe a teacher or a coach gave us the encouragement to soldier on despite setbacks. A supervisor or a mentor may have offered those words when we were faced with the challenges of our jobs. Or maybe it was your friend or lover who told you how much they believe in you, and those words reminded you that you are loved.
Of course the opposite of those mentioned above are the killjoys; the people who sabotage us. They tear down our self esteem by shooting down our ideas, or the person's worth by withholding support of our dreams and ambitions.
I've felt the damaging effects of sabotage on my dreams, and I've seen firsthand the effects of someones refusal to say "I believe in you." For myself, I had many dreams crushed over the years. When someone constantly pops your balloon, you stop believing you can achieve anything. Withholding affirmation of someones dream can fill a person with such self- doubt in their abilities, especially when coupled with negative comments about their worthiness.
I believe in you means more than just "I believe you can do this." It means "I believe in your fundamental goodness, your kindness, and your love for the people you care about. I believe in your talent. I believe in your passion and your hope to make a small contribution towards the beauty of this world. I believe in you...
