One of my favorite Christmas memories involves a phone call. My oldest brother had the brilliant idea to call one of his nieces or nephews each year on Christmas Eve from the North Pole.
When my oldest was five years old, he received the special call from Santa. He had just finished his bath and was in the process of putting on his pjs, when the phone rang. I spoke quietly to my brother, filling him in on small details before calling Scott to the phone.
"Scott, there is a phone call for you. It's from the North Pole!" Scott's eyes widened and he looked a little scared, but I encouraged him to say hello.
The conversation began with Santa introducing himself to Scott and he asked him to verify our new address for his delivery team (we had recently moved.)
Scott dutifully repeated the new address and then Santa asked Scott if he still wanted a bicycle for Christmas. His eyes widened again in awe, "Yes, yes that's what I want, with a bike helmet, too!" Santa told him it was very smart to wear a helmet. He asked about his brother and if he wanted anything special because Keith was just a baby. Scott put in a request for Keith ( a Pooh bear plush toy.)
As the conversation wound down, Santa told Scott he really liked his pajamas and proceeded to describe what he was wearing. I thought the child was going to faint! "Santa, how do you know I'm wearing those pajamas?" Santa explained that the elves give a full report and even tell him when kids fall asleep so he can make his delivery.
Scott promised to leave out Santa's favorite cookies (chocolate chip and sugar), a glass of eggnog, and some carrots for the reindeer. Then Santa said, "ho, ho, ho, Merry Christmas Scott" and hung up.
When he had recovered from the shock and excitement of talking to Santa Claus, we prepared the cookies and egg nog. My son went to bed without any protest. In the morning Santa had delivered his bike and helmet and his brother's Pooh Bear just like he had promised.
