We Gather Together

Ahh, bliss. All of my chicks are safely home.

My oldest son arrived late this morning from college. After proudly showing him off around my worksite, we picked up his sister from school and headed home.

I liked watching him enter the house. He sniffed and noted the new air freshener. His brother and I like the apple cider odor, but Scott told me it smelled like cough medicine. He walked around looking, (checking), to make sure everything was the same. Except for the air freshener, the house looks the same as when he left it back in August.

We humans are creatures of habit. We crave adventure, we talk about all of the new things we've experienced, but at the end of the day we still like our own bed the best.

When I left for college many years ago, I had already moved out of my parent's home and had been independent for a few years. That did not change my expectations that everything remain exactly as I remembered when I came home for holidays or long weekends. When my parents bought new furniture or painted a room, I took it as a personal affront. How dare they change this or that?

As we grow older (and wiser), we realize that change is inevitable. As we grow and change so does everyone around us. Our parents grow older, our siblings grow up, and our friends move away, too.

The one constant in our lives is how we feel about Home and the loved ones who reside there.
