My son and I were sitting around chatting late this afternoon when we began to talk about his older brother, and how much we were looking forward to seeing him Thanksgiving weekend.
Keith told me that he and his brother shared a great conversation (via text message) the other day.
The conversation they shared was about their similar circumstances. Scott broke his finger this past week. Keith rolled his ankle, yet again. Scott was giving Keith advice on how to treat the ankle and how to avoid future injury. As Keith read some of the conversation, I realized Scott sounded just like me. In fact he noted, " Most of what I've learned about this, I got from Mom." High praise indeed!
Scott told him about beginning his job search. He graduates in May. Keith told Scott about applying for college. He too, graduates in May. When Scott heard about Keith's plans and ideas, he gave him some advice- learn from my mistakes freshman year.
He also told his brother that going away to college is something he should experience. He felt that he is succeeding because he was able to break away from his high school pals and get through four years of college. He will be the only one of his closest friends graduating next spring.
His best piece of advice he saved for last, "Dream big." How I wish someone had shared those words of wisdom with me at seventeen. Look for more than the immediate. Take risks, break out of the mold of high school. Challenge yourself, and put yourself out there.
I was crying when I heard Scott's words. I've raised a remarkable young man- two remarkable young men.
Dream big!
