Treasured Memories

Today I was wishing an old friend a Happy Birthday. We've known each other since high school.  Thanks to Facebook, and our recent high school reunion we have reconnected.

Her husband posted a photo tribute to her in honor of her birthday.  As I flipped through each photo, I saw a full life unfold before my eyes. She has endured pain and suffering, but her photos reveal the joy found in each moment, even the troubling times.

Growing older has been on my mind recently, as each of  my high school friends hits the big 5-0. We joke about our aches and pains, receding hair lines, and expanding waistlines. As we reminisce about our wild youth, I detect only a touch of wistfulness. Good times, indeed.

Why do we fight growing older? Why do we fear that leaving our youth behind somehow brings all the joy to an end? As I look at those photos and see the girl I knew grow and change, I am awed by how blessed and full her life has been, and thankfully there is still so much more to come.

I spent the evening reflecting on my own life.  As I study each of my own photos from the past,  I am reminded of so many wonderful people; the good times we had and the memories we created.

Treasure every moment, find a fragment of joy in each day. They may not be captured on film, but they are forever treasured in your heart.
