My Old Friend Autumn

Today I saw Autumn peeking out from behind the huge hulking presence of Summer.

I never fail to notice the way the earth begins it's tilt away from the sun as the Autumn equinox approaches. Sunlight suddenly shifts, casting a gentler shadow on the grass. The sun rises a bit later each morning, and the long days of summer begin to slowly wind down.

The air this evening held a touch of sweetness; cool and refreshing after the heat of the day.
The green leaves on trees and shrubs look just a bit paler, although it will be Thanksgiving before we see the golds and reds of fall in Florida.

I miss the change of seasons in living in the Deep South, and I miss Autumn most of all. As a child, I loved the way Fall caressed my senses. The sight of those brilliant colored leaves; crimson reds, burnt orange, golden yellows. The sweet-tart taste of a crisp apple, and the smell of smoke from a burning mound of leaves that my Dad had raked into a pile.

When the kids were young, we traveled to the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee in October so they could witness Fall in all its glory. Their excitement added to my own thrill of revisiting my old friend.

Autumn- I've rolled out the welcome mat and I am eagerly awaiting your arrival.
